Sealing and Polishing Concrete - How To Guide

Surface Preparation and Parameters:

Concrete surface must be clean and free of all contaminants and water. Do not apply if rain is forecast within 24 hours. If moisture is present, the sealer may have white spots, and may show premature de-lamination and failure. Unless used as a curing compound, the concrete should cure for at least 28 days to allow all moisture to evaporate from the concrete prior to application of sealer, or white spots and inadequate film formation may occur.

Substrate temperature must be no less than 45 degrees F and not exceed 85 degrees F. If applied outside these limits, the sealer may not achieve adequate film formation, and may have excessive air entrapment, bubbles, blushing or hazing.

Application:

Exposed Aggregate - Apply using a 1 1/4” long nap roller cover using long even uniform strokes at approximately 75-150 sq. feet per gallon. Unsealed areas may appear to “suck in” more sealer. Two coats are recommended. Do not allow to Puddle! Thick or puddle areas may prevent the solvent from evaporating and may be susceptible to moisture intrusion, which may cause white spots. Applying too thin may cause sealer to prematurely de-laminate, flake, or wear away. Allow sealer to dry 24 hours for light traffic and 48 hours for heavy traffic. If applying two coats wait approximately 4 – 6 hours between coats. Clean up with Xylene. Try Crete Seal 30 for best results.

Broom Finish - Apply using a 3/8” – 1/2” long nap roller cover using long even uniform strokes at approximately 100 – 150 square feet per gallon. Unsealed areas may appear to “suck in” more sealer. Two coats are recommended. Do not allow to Puddle! Thick or puddle areas may prevent the solvent from evaporating and may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which may cause white spots. Applying too thin may cause sealer to prematurely de-laminate, flake, or wear away. Allow sealer to dry 24 hours for light traffic and 48 hours for heavy traffic. If applying two coats wait approximately 4 – 6 hours between coats. Clean up with Xylene. Try Penetrating Crete Seal 25 or Crete Seal 25 for best results.

Troweled Concrete - Apply using a 3/8” – 1/2” long nap roller cover using long even uniform strokes at approximately 200 – 300 square feet per gallon. Unsealed areas may appear to “suck in” more sealer. Two coats are recommended. Do not allow to Puddle! Thick or puddle areas may prevent the solvent from evaporating and may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which may cause white spots. Applying too thin may cause sealer to prematurely de-laminate, flake or wear away. Allow sealer to dry 24 hours for light traffic and 48 hours for heavy traffic. If applying two coats wait approximately 4 – 6 hours between coats. Clean up with Xylene. Try any one of our great sealers, depending on desired finish, for best results.

Stamped or Stenciled Decorative Concrete - Apply using a 3/8” – 1/2” long nap roller cover using long even uniform strokes at approximately 150 – 300 square feet per gallon depending on porosity and texture of substrate. Unsealed areas will appear to “suck in” more sealer. Two coats are recommended. Do not allow to Puddle! Thick or puddle areas may prevent the solvent from evaporating and may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which may cause white spots. Applying too thin may cause sealer to prematurely delaminate, flake or wear away. Allow sealer to dry 24 hours for light traffic and 48 hours for heavy traffic. If applying two coats wait approximately 4 – 6 hours between coats. Clean up with Xylene. Try any one of our great sealers, depending on desired finish, for best results.

Waxing/Polishing - Applying wax is essential to the life and durability of an interior decorative concrete floor. Not recommended for exterior applications. Apply using either a mop or high speed burnishing equipment. When using high speed burnishing equipment, apply using equipment manufacturers specified directions. When applying by mop, apply in thin coats. Allow to dry, usually 1-3 hours, then apply again. 5-7 coats are recommended for the toughest film, and glossiest sheen. Occasional maintenance coats may be required. Try Crystal Crete for best results.

Notes:

Coverage rates may vary for all coatings and substrates depending on porosity, density, texture etc. If applying by spray method, extended coverage rates may be achieved, but be aware that less material may be applied and inadequate film formation or performance expectations may be limited.

For all safety precautions, first aid and warranty information refer to MSDS sheets, product labels, or tech data sheets for the specific product to be used.
